Parents may not realize just how available illicit drugs are to their children. They may not realize how young children are when they begin to experiment with alcohol and drugs. School and street environment are very important in this sphere. If a teen strives to gain respect and become part of some group, he/she might imitate what other teens in this group do. For example, try some drug. This is cool, you know…
Drugs interfere with normal functioning of human organism and human brain particularly. First one just has some pleasant feelings and is certain that he/she can drop doing this whenever he/she wants. But after some time, brain changes its work slightly due to the influence of drugs. After this moment it is very difficult to give up substance abuse without outside help. Treatment is already necessary. A variety of approaches are used in treatment programs to help patients deal with these cravings and possibly avoid drug relapse.
Substance abuse is both social and personal problem. Drugs are really easy to get for teenagers. On the other hand, it is a personal decision to say “yes” and do some drugs. In spite of lots of information available about the harm that substance abuse causes, many teens still believe that they can do drugs a couple (or dozen) of times and then forget about it and see no consequences in their health.
Even occasional substance use can provoke changes in brain, worsen memory and influence school performance. Teen’s organism is in the stage of development and growth and therefore is easily adaptable to changes – for example, to using drugs. Different drugs have different affect on human body, but there are common facts about all of them. All drugs are harmful for health and mind functioning. All drugs provoke either tolerance or addiction – physical or psychological. Long-term effects of drug abuse are usually very severe. So every teenager should think twice (but preferably more) before even thinking about “trying some cool stuff”.
