Reasons for Teens’ Violent Behavior

residential treatment

There are situations when we become aware of high risk situations and are seriously concerned about our safety or safety of other people. The possibility of violence should not be ignored or minimized. Unfortunately, rather often peer pressure and desire to be accepted in some companies or even gangs makes teens demonstrate violence and anti-social behavior. But the wish to seem strong is not the only reason of teen violence. Very closely connected with this reason is also the desire to establish a certain reputation within peers and maybe adults.

Another reason of being violent for a teen is the desire to protect his/her freedom. Violent behavior of a teenager also may represent an attempt to punish other people around, or to obtain justice or revenge. If a teen feels suppressed by environment, he/she might seek a way out to freedom through violent behavior.

Feeling of guilt may cause violent behavior as well. Violent acts in such a case are used to provoke punishment which, in its turn, reduces feelings of guilt.

Exposure to a group of violent people creates a perception that violence may be justified and that the individual is not going to be singled out for their own violent behavior. Especially if a teen experienced violent acts from his/her parents – most likely he/she will behave similarly with other people.

Violent acts are sometimes the result of impaired thinking and strange beliefs that are caused by illness, disease, drugs, or severe medical problems. Demonstration of violence among teens is often caused by substance abuse. Assumption of drugs or alcohol seriously influences the way of thinking and reactions and may provoke teens to violent acts even without any obvious reasons.

Media and TV show violence in very bright colors and can distort the reality of a child or adolescent. In an average action movie very often there is a character who achieves his/her goals by killing people, smashing cars or destroying something. After watching such a movie teens might imagine themselves similar heroes and strive for justice or just simply for their wishes demonstrating violence.

And finally one more reason which is very provocative to violent behavior, substance abuse, crime, etc. This is boredom and lack of life goals. Teenagers who feel bored and do not see any objectives in their life, who have no distinct system and were not taught human values, often simply cannot imagine doing anything positive. Destruction and violence they spread are in their souls. This is the soul that we must cure.
